Okay – here’s my Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells review. The 552s are an adjustable dumbbell set that allows you to quickly select weights ranging from 5 to 52.5 pounds. The way these work is pretty genius – you select the amount of weight you want on the dumbbell with an adjustable dial, and when you lift the bar it only brings as much weight with it as you selected. The rest of the weight plates stay in the base, and don’t end up making any sort of mess. I also ended up picking up the Bowflex stand, which was a bit extra but I don’t have a weight rack at home so otherwise I would have ended up picking up my dumbbells from the floor. If you need a heavier set of adjustable dumbbells, I know Bowflex makes ones that go up to 90 pounds.

If you’re a woman, or you have a wife that trains with weights – I can’t recommend the 552s enough. My wife isn’t that muscular, as she prefers to do cardio for her main workouts. However, sometimes she’ll come down to train with me and we’ll work on some dumbbell exercises. The 552s start at 5 pounds and go up by 2.5 pounds per turn on the dial, which makes picking light weights easy. When she’s done her reps I can drop the bars back in, jack the weight up to 50, and in seconds I’m pumping out my reps. These things are very fast to work with.
